Two Republican lawmakers become first U.S. diplomats to visit Ukraine since Russian invasion

Two Republican state Senators became the first United States diplomats to set foot in Ukraine since the unprovoked Russian invasion when they visited Kyiv this week.

Sen. Steve Daines of Montana and Rep. Victoria Spartz of Indiana landed in Ukraine on Thursday to tour Kyiv and the horrific scenes in Bucha, where the world was exposed to the brutality of the Russian forces on the ground in Ukraine.

Rep. Daines shared photos of the violence in the streets of Ukraine, saying it is important that the world sees what Russian President Vladimir Putin has done.

“There is indisputable evidence of Putin’s war crimes everywhere—the images of shallow mass graves filled with civilians, women and children are heart wrenching,” Daines said in a statement. “America and the world need to know about Putin’s atrocities against the innocent people of Ukraine now, not after time has passed and the aftermath of evil and bloodshed have been cleaned up.”

In an interview with Neil Cavuto on Fox News, Daines said, “I’ve seen a lot of horrific things over the years in terms of storm damages and accidents,” Daines said. “I’ve never seen anything like this. I mean, these were children. These were children who were murdered.”

US President Joe Biden echoed Daines’ sentiments earlier this week, calling the brutal, execution-style killing of at least 410 Ukrainian civilians in Bucha by Russian forces “genocide,” the first time the president has leveled the serious accusation against the Kremlin.

“More evidence is coming out about literally the horrible things that the Russians have done in Ukraine,” Biden told reporters on Tuesday. “And we’re going to only learn more and more about the devastation. We’ll let the lawyers decide, internationally, whether or not it qualifies [as genocide] but it sure seems that way to me.”
