Former president Donald Trump dominated a straw poll of youth activists at the Turning Point 2024 Student Action Summit, held by the conservative activist organization Turning Point USA this weekend.
According to Fox News, an overwhelming 78.7 percent of respondents polled at the summit said they would vote for former president Trump for POTUS in 2024. The only other Republican who scored in double digits was Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who came in at 19 percent of the vote in the straw poll.
Former vice president Mike Pence only garnered .3 percent of votes, along with Senator Ted Cruz and former UN ambassador Nikki Haley.
Trump appeared as a speaker at the Turning Point event, where he repeated his claims that the 2020 presidential election was stolen. He also hinted at a 2024 run. “If I stayed home, if I announced that I was not going to run for office, the persecution of Donald Trump would immediately stop,” Trump said. “But that’s what they want me to do. And you know what? There’s no chance I do that.”
DeSantis also spoke at the summit, but did not mention Trump in his address. Instead, he focused on what he views as failures of the Biden administration, pinpointing immigration as one of Biden’s biggest letdowns. “What we’ve seen in the last year and a half is the largest illegal migration into this country in the history of the United States of America. We have record human trafficking, we have record sex trafficking, and we have record drug trafficking,” DeSantis told the crowd.
No Republican has formally announced their candidacy for 2024, but attendees polled at the summit were asked who they thought would be the toughest Democratic opponent for a GOP candidate to beat in 2024. President Biden received a mere 4.4 percent of that vote, and California Governor Gavin Newsom received 30 percent.
