Republican Senator Ted Cruz (Texas) said this week that if former president Donald Trump were to break his silence on a 2024 presidential run and enter the race officially, the large field of potential GOP candidates would thin significantly.
Speaking to Fox News Digital at the Turning Point USA conference this week in Tampa, Florida, Cruz said he believes almost all potential Republican candidates for POTUS are waiting to make official announcements until after Trump makes a decision on whether to enter the race. “Look, the lay of the land is everyone is waiting to see what Trump decides to do. Anyone who tells you they’re not is lying to you. And he’s going to decide on whatever time frame he desires,” said Cruz.
Cruz said Trump’s decision is the biggest factor in the GOP presidential race because Trump remains a dominant figure in the Republican party even after leaving office. Cruz told Fox News Digital Trump is “going to do what he wants” in 2024, and “will remain an incredibly important leader in the United States.”
Trump has yet to make a public announcement about whether he will enter the 2024 presidential race, though he has hinted at it multiple times at various rallies and other appearances with increasing regularity as the January 6th Committee hearings have heated up in Congress.
While Trump remains a driving force in the Republican party, voters are not as keen on another Trump-Biden matchup in the next general election. In a recent poll, 60 percent of voters said they would rather vote for a moderate third party candidate if presented with a Trump versus Biden rematch in 2024.
