Speaker Nancy Pelosi says ‘defund the police’ is dead: “Public safety is our responsibility”

On Sunday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat from California, said that the Democratic Party is not in support of defunding the police, despite the fact that numerous Democratic lawmakers voiced their support for diverting funds away from or eliminating law enforcement.

Pelosi’s comments came during an appearance with ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos. Stephanopoulos asked Pelosi for her thoughts on how Democrats should address Rep. Cori Bush, a fellow Democrat from Missouri, standing by the mantra “defund the police.”

Pelosi answered to Stephanopoulos by saying, “Well, with all the respect in the world for Cori Bush, that is not the position of the Democratic Party. Community safety, to protect and defend in every way, is our oath of office.”

The speaker added that she has “sympathy” for those who are mistreated, and she stressed the importance of passing police reform initiatives, “whether it’s no-knock, chokehold, or some of those issues, even if we can’t get it all done.”

She continued, “I quote one of my colleagues from New York, Ritchie Torres, a brand new member of Congress way on the left, saying that ‘defund the police is dead.’ That causes concern with a few in our caucus, but public safety is our responsibility.”

Bush previously defended her anti-police beliefs not long after her car was hit by gunfire in St. Louis. She said during an interview with Axios last week, “‘Defund the police’ is not the problem… We dangled the carrot in front of people’s faces and said we can get it done and that Democrats deliver, when we haven’t totally delivered.”

Over 20 Democratic Congress members have indicated at least some support for abolishing law enforcement or relocating funds from police.
