On Tuesday, FBI executive assistant director refused to give answers regarding the identity of Ray Epps and whether any FBI agents or informants participated in any capacity in the riot at the Capitol on January 6. Republican Texas Senator Ted Cruz was the primary figure seeking answers.
“How many FBI agents or confidential informants actively participated in the events of January 6th?” Cruz asked of the FBI’s Executive Assistant Director of the national Security Branch Jill Sanborn. His questioning took place during a hearing on domestic violence threats.
“Sir, I’m sure you can appreciate that I can’t go into the specifics of sources and methods – ” Sanborn began to respond, but she was cut off by Cruz asking his question again.
“I can’t answer that,” Sanborn said as she participated in the meeting virtually. Cruz continued his questioning,” Did any FBI agents or confidential informants commit crimes of violence on January 6?” Sanborn once again replied, “I can’t answer that.”
Cruz pushed again, “Did any FBI agents or FBI informants actively encourage and incite crimes of violence on January 6?” For a third time, Sanborn issued the same response. Cruz shifted gears and said that President Joe Biden must answer questions about whether the FBI played a role in the riot that occurred.
“Unfortunately under Joe Biden we have seen an incredibly partisan Department of Justice,” he said. “And both the Department of Justice and the FBI have an arrogance that they are not accountable to anyone, that they can stonewall.”
Following his remark about the president, Cruz pivoted to ask, “Who is Ray Epps?” Sanborn replied, “I’m aware of the individual, sir, I don’t have the specific background on him.” Epps, an ex-Marine, has been accused of being an FBI plant to encourage the events that ensued at the Capitol that day.
The House Select Committee tasked with investigating January 6th are aware of Epps, but said following an interview, “Mr. Epps informed us that he was not employed by, working with, or acting at the direction of any law enforcement agency on January 5th or 6th, or at any other time, and that he has never been an informant for the FBI or any other law enforcement agency.”
