A group of House Republicans introduced a bill Tuesday to shut down the ‘un-American’ newly formed Disinformation Governance Board, which the right is likening to the Orwellian ‘Ministry of Truth.’
The bill, which is led by GOP Louisiana Representative Mike Johnson, would defund the brand new unit just launched under the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and headed by Nina Jankowicz.
“Today I led 50 @HouseGOP Members in introducing a bill to defund Biden’s ‘Ministry of Truth.’ The government has no role in determining what constitutes truth or acceptable speech, and this dystopian, unconstitutional board must be dissolved,” Johnson tweeted on Tuesday. “If Biden won’t do it, then we will.”
Other lawmakers who signed on with the proposed dissolution of the board are Republican Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanik as well as Republican Representatives Andy Biggs of Arizona and Lauren Boebert of Colorado, amongst others.
Senator Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee also called for the dissolution of the board. She sent a letter to DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on Tuesday claiming the new board threatens Americans’ First Amendment rights and insisted that the partisan control is specifically chilling to conservative speech.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene said the DHS Disinformation Governance Board is “communism.”
“They don’t want you to have it because they don’t want you to be able to say what you think and feel or sort out the truth yourself,” the Georgia Republican told voters during a campaign event in her district this week.
Mayorkas revealed the Disinformation Governance Board during congressional testimony last week after reports emerged of its creation.
Jankowicz tweeted after news of the board and her position broke: “Cat’s out of the bag: here’s what I’ve been up to the past two months, and why I’ve been a bit quiet on here. Honoured to be serving in the Biden Administration @DHSgov and helping shape our counter-disinformation efforts.”
She added that “a HUGE focus of our work, and indeed, one of the key reasons the Board was established, is to maintain the Dept’s committment (sic) to protecting free speech, privacy, civil rights, & civil liberties.”
Biden’s team, including Secretary Mayorkas have said that the purpose of the agency is to coordinate DHS online monitoring.
