Rep. Sanchez FLIPS OFF Republicans at CHARITY event

House Representative Linda Sanchez (D-CA) made headlines at this week’s Congressional Baseball Game when she turned to the Republican dugout and raised her middle finger at her colleagues.

Sanchez was at bat in the bottom of the sixth inning of the game, which took place on Thursday night at Nationals Stadium in Washington, DC, when she drew a lead-off walk. The Democrats decided to put in a pinch-runner, and on her way back to the dugout, Sanchez raised her left hand at the Republican team in their dugout, and flipped her middle finger at them.

The gesture prompted criticism from Republicans. “Rep. Linda Sanchez is classless,” Tweeted right-wing author Nick Adams. “Giving the middle finger to the GOP Baseball team is hateful and divisive. Sanchez should be banned from all future Congressional baseball games and permanently stripped of all committees.”

Sanchez later apologized for the gesture, saying it was in response to an  “offensive and misogynistic comment” made by someone in the GOP dugout. She did not disclose what the comment was.

“I have no tolerance for men who make women feel like they are unimportant or don’t belong – especially on the field. I will always stand against that kind of bigotry,” she said on Friday.

Her statement continued, “The Congressional Baseball Game is one of my favorite events of the year. It’s a great cause and brings both sides of the aisle together for a night off from partisan politics. That is why it really struck a nerve when I heard an offensive and misogynistic comment from the Republican side on my way back to the dugout. In the heat of the moment, I reacted.”

The annual Congressional Baseball Game for Charity has been played since 1909 and in more recent years has raised money for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Washington, the Washington Nationals Dream Foundation, the Washington Literacy Center, and the US Capitol Police Memorial Fund.

The Congressional Baseball Game is held every summer. All proceeds are donated to charity. The game has been held since 1909, and since then, Republicans have won the most games (44) – though Democrats still hold the largest victory (36-4). In Thursday’s game, Republicans won 10-0.
