A new University of New Hampshire Granite State Poll result shows New Hampshire Republican voters favor Florida Governor Ron DeSantis over former president Donald Trump as the GOP nominee for 2024, but only by a hair.
The poll showed DeSantis at 39 percent of voters who would favor him as the 2024 nominee, and Trump at 37 percent. The results are a notable change from previous polls by the university, including one in October 2021 that showed DeSantis at 19 percent and Trump at 43 percent in New Hampshire.
While the dip in support for Trump is noteworthy, Director of the UNH Survey Center Andrew Smith points out the pattern is not unusual.
“Trump slipping in pre-primary polls is part of a typical pattern,” Smith said in a statement. “A party’s losing candidate in the prior election is typically the best-known person in their party. As the primary gets closer, new candidates emerge and attract more media attention, and therefore more voter attention, than the losing candidate from the previous election.”
The poll asked 318 likely New Hampshire Republican primary voters who they would favor as the 2024 POTUS nominee. The poll’s margin of error is 5.5 percent, which means Trump and DeSantis are statistically tied for the lead, according to this particular poll.
Others included in the poll are former vice president Mike Pence, who came in at 9 percent, former UN ambassador Nikki Haley, who was favored by 6 percent of respondents, and Texas Senator Ted Cruz, who was selected by only 1 percent of those polled.
The same poll showed a 2024 rematch between Trump and President Joe Biden would likely swing in Biden’s favor. “President Biden won the state of New Hampshire in the 2020 presidential election by 8 percentage points over former president Donald Trump,” the poll reads. “If a rematch of this contest were held today, Biden holds almost an identical lead; 50% say they would vote for Biden, 43 percent say they would vote for Trump.”
At the time of the poll, none of the candidates included had formally announced their candidacy for the GOP nomination.
