Pence and Trump HEAD TO HEAD in Arizona gubernatorial race

Former vice president Mike Pence and former president Donald Trump have endorsed competing candidates in the hotly-contested Arizona governor’s race, with Pence announcing his endorsement of Karrin Taylor Robson (R).

Pence made the announcement this weekend. “As Arizona Democrats pursue the reckless Biden-Harris agenda, Karrin Taylor Robson is the only candidate for Governor that will keep Arizona’s border secure and streets safe, empower parents and create great schools, and promote conservative values,” he said. He later retweeted Robson’s announcement of his endorsement.

Robson is an Arizona developer who has found herself entwined in GOP state politics for many years. She is the president of AZ Strategies, a land use firm located in Phoenix. She was previously appointed to the Arizona Board of Regents, which governs the state university system, by Republican Governor Doug Ducey.

Pence’s announcement of his support for Robson came on the heels of his former boss’ endorsement of Robson’s opponent, Kari Lake. Lake is a television personality who is known for her 22 years at KSAZ-TV, where she was a popular anchor. Lake has persistently touted the idea that the 2020 presidential election was stolen.

Trump announced his endorsement of Lake late last year, writing in a statement, “Few can take on the Fake News Media like Kari.” It goes on to say Lake is “strong on crime” and will protect the military and veterans and opposes COVID lockdowns and cancel culture.

Lake thanked the former president for his endorsement, Tweeting, “Thank you, President Trump, for your endorsement. This means so much to me because I know how much you love America and how much the people of this country love you! I promise to fight as hard for the people of Arizona as you have fought for us.”

Trump and Pence are both reportedly considering presidential runs in 2024, though neither has formally announced his candidacy.
