After a detailed analysis, it has been determined that US Representative Kai Kahele (D-HI) spent very little time on Capitol Hill.
This has contradicted his campaign promises of showing up and his attack on Representatives who had slacked on the job.
According to the Honolulu Civil Beat, he not only skipped President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address, but was also the only member of Hawaii’s federal delegation to miss meetings with Honolulu officials in DC to discuss the Federal Transit administration over a $10 billion rail project.
Additionally, he did not attend the House Armed Services Committee hearing to discuss the Department of Defense’s $773 billion budget for the 2023 fiscal year.
In the year 2022, Kahele has only voted 5 times in person, with all of them being over the course of three days in January. The other 120 votes were cast via proxy, which means he asked another representative to vote on his behalf. Kahele has voted via proxy more than all but 3 colleagues.
US Rep. Ed Case, also from Hawaii, has yet to vote via proxy in 2022. He only voted via proxy 30 times since 2020. Kahele voted by proxy 49 times prior to December 2021. Most came during Hawaii’s flooding in March 2021. He has yet to talk about his increased absences from Washington, D.C.
