Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk Tweeted over the weekend that he would be implementing new expectations for Twitter employees if his acquisition of the social media platform completes.
In a Tweet on Friday, Musk warned he would be a much stricter employer than Twitter workers are used to. He also pledged the company would shift its focus to software development and other tech-focused areas.
“If Twitter acquisition completes, company will be super focused on hardcore software engineering, design, infosec & server hardware,” Musk wrote. “Also, work ethic expectations would be extreme, but much less than I demand of myself.”
The acquisition in question is Musk’s $44 billion takeover offer, which the billionaire is still working to secure. It is believed he will succeed, as Morgan Stanley and some other unnamed financial institutions, and Musk also raised an additional $7 billion in funding by bringing on investors including venture capital firm Sequoia Capital and cryptocurrency platform Binance. Last week it was announced Musk would serve as interim CEO of Twitter when the deal is complete.
“I strongly believe that all managers in a technical area must be technically excellent,” Musk said in a followup to his own Tweet. “Managers in software must write great software or it’s like being a cavalry captain who can’t ride a horse!”
The Tweet made some wonder whether the new CEO plans on making some managerial changes upon taking over the company.
When the takeover bid was first announced and accepted, Musk alluded to his planned changes, Tweeting, “Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated. I also want to make Twitter better than ever by enhancing the product with new features, making the algorithms open source to increase trust, defeating the spam bots, and authenticating all humans.”
