Efforts to ban race-based ‘guilt’ training advances in Florida

Governor Ron DeSantis has attempted to ban critical race theory in the state of Florida, and his efforts are succeeding. The Republican-controlled state Senate Education Committee approved the legislation in a vote along party lines.

According to Newsweek, the bill titled “Individual Freedom” moved forward Tuesday, and would prohibit school and private businesses from making people feel “guilt” about the country’s racist past.

Additionally, it would prevent employers from requiring “any individual, as a condition of employment, membership, licensing, credentialing or passing an examination, to training, instruction, or any other required activity” that promotes certain race/racism related concepts.

Specifically, it would prohibit business from providing training that “espouses, promotes, advances, or compels” people to believe they share “responsibility for, or should be discriminated against or receive adverse treatment because of, actions committed in the past by other members of the same race, color, sex, or national origin.”

Lastly, the bill would allow teachers to facilitate discussions on sexism, slavery, racial oppression and segregation in “an age-appropriate manner” but curriculum “may not be used to indoctrinate or persuade students to a particular point of view inconsistent with the principles of this subsection or state academic standards.”
