Donald Trump vows to ban transgender women from female sports if re-elected

Former President Donald Trump said he would ban trangender women from participating in women’s sports if he were re-elected as president. Trump promised this during a rally in Conroe, TX on Saturday.

The former president said, “We will ban ment from participating in women’s sports. So ridiculous.” He then went on to criticize Lia Thomas, the trans swimmer from University of Pennsylvania (NBC News). Thomas has sparked international debate this past month for breaking multiple records at a meet in Ohio.

Trump’s statements are similar to that of other conservatives in many states over the past few years. Specifically, in the past year alone, more than 30 states considered bills that would ban transgender student-athletes from playing sports on teams that differ from their biological sex. Only ten states actually passed legislation on the subject. So far this year, 17 states are considering similar bills.

The former president had previously denounced trans-inclusive sports teams. “Young girls and women are incensed that they are now being forced to compete against those who are biological males. It’s not good for women. It’s not good for women’s sports, which worked for so long and so hard to get to where they are,” he had said. “If this does not change, women’s sports as we know it will die.”
