Donald Trump calls January 6 speech a ‘distraction,’ says President Biden ‘totally failed’

On Thursday, former President Trump responded to President Joe Biden’s speech on the anniversary of the January 6 riot at the Capitol.

The former president canceled his own planned press conference but instead issued a statement calling Biden’s remarks “political theater” and “a distraction for the fact that Biden has completely and totally failed.”

“Biden, who is destroying our Nation with insane policies of open Borders, corrupt Elections, disastrous energy policies, unconstitutional mandates, and devastating school closures, used my name today to try to further divide America,” Trump said, despite Biden not specifically using his name during the speech.

He added, “The Democrats want to own this day of Jan. 6 so they can stoke fears and divide America. I say, let them have it because America sees through [their] lies and polarizations.”

Biden has consistently avoided using Trump’s name during any addresses or remarks even when clearly referring to him. His speech did, however, mark his most pointed criticism of his predecessor, saying Trump “spread a web of lies” about the 2020 election.

He said that Trump had done “what no president in American history, the history of this country, has ever, ever done: He refused to accept the results of the election. For the first time in our history, a president had not just lost an election. He tried to prevent a peaceful transfer of power.”

A House committee has been tasked with investigating the events of the day as they pertain to the former president, and over the last six months, they have conducted hundreds of interviews and collected tens of thousands of documents. The committee has said they will begin releasing their findings in the next six months as they wrap up their research.
