Cook Political Report updates its election ratings, shifting midterms in favor of Republicans

The Cook Political Report made some changes this week to its ratings to predict the winners of the midterm elections, and those changes resulted in a stark shift to the right, making the chance of Republicans taking back the US House of Representatives look more bleak.

The changes by the Cook Report, which is a non-partisan political newsletter that focuses on election analysis, showed Republicans taking 8 more House races in November, while only 2 Democrats changed to likely winners. The report updates periodically as congressional maps are finalized and candidates enter and drop out of races. In its latest update, Cook appears to show an increasingly uphill battle for Democrats to maintain control of the House.

The updates made this week include:

  • Connecticut’s 2nd District moves from “Solid Democratic” to “Likely Democratic”
  • Arizona’s 4th District moves from “Likely Democratic” to “Lean Democratic”
  • California’s 49th District moves from “Likely Democratic” to “Lean Democratic”
  • Connecticut’s 5th District moves from “Likely Democratic” to “Lean Democratic”
  • Nevada’s 1st District moves from “Leans Democratic” to “Tossup”
  • Oregon’s 5th District moves from “Leans Democratic” to “Tossup”
  • Pennsylvania’s 7th District moves from “Tossup” to “Leans Republican”
  • Minnesota’s 1st District moves from “Likely Republican” to “Solid Republican”
  • Pennsylvania’s 1st District moves from “Likely Republican” to “Solid Republican”
  • Pennsylvania’s 10th District moves from “Likely Republican” to “Solid Republican”

If the Cook predictions are correct, Democrats will have a difficult time overcoming a so-called red wave in November. The changes come as the White House struggles to maintain the confidence of voters, with surging gas prices and inflation causing Biden’s approval rating to fall.
