CNN President Jeff Zucker resigns over undisclosed inappropriate relationship with colleague

On Wednesday, CNN President Jeff Zucker resigned from his position without warning after he acknowledged a consensual relationship he has with another network executive.

The issue came to light during an investigation of anchor Chris Cuomo, who has now been fired by the network over his entanglement in his brother, Andrew Cuomo’s, sexual harassment scandal.

Zucker said he had been asked about his relationship with longtime aide Allison Gollust as part of the investigation into Cuomo, which found that the former anchor had given assistance to former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo as he was going through his own sexual harassment investigation.

“I acknowledged the relationship had evolved in recent years,” Zucker wrote in a memo that announced the close of his nine-year tenure at CNN. “I was required to disclose it when it began but I didn’t. I was wrong.”

In a memo to employees, Jason Kilar, the CEO of CNN parent corporation WarnerMedia, said that in the meantime, three senior CNN executives would run the network. Zucker has been a leader in the industry since he served as the executive producer of the “Today” show during the 1990s.

The next decade, he began running NBC’s entertainment division, where he had a crucial role in putting the reality show “The Apprentice” on air, which starred former President Donald Trump.

Gollust, who worked as a publicist but rose to the rank of CNN’s executive vice president and chief marketing officer, plans on staying at the network.

“Jeff and I have been close friends and professional partners for over 20 years,” she noted in a statement. “Recently, our relationship changed during COVID. I regret that we didn’t disclose it at the right time. I’m incredibly proud of my time at CNN and look forward to continuing the great work we do everyday.”
