A New York State Representative lashed out at prominent US Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez this weekend, accusing the New York Democrat of spending too much time away from her district since her election to the House of Representatives in 2019.

Queens Democrat Jessica Ramos blasted AOC on Twitter on Friday, claiming she had been requesting a meeting with the congresswoman for months and had not been able to get in touch with her, in spite of their offices being in the same building. Ramos, who represents the 13th District, also said Ocasio-Cortez is almost never present in the community.

“I gave up texting her a while back, and as petitioning unfolded, I reached out through staff and requested a meeting,” Ramos wrote. “I have not spoken to my congressperson in months. Maybe more than a year? What else is it I’m supposed to do?”

When questioned about the Tweet by a follower, Ramos confirmed that she had not heard from or seen AOC in months in spite of their offices being “in the same building on the same floor.”

Ocasio-Cortez has responded to Ramos this week, defending herself against the allegation that she does not put in much face-time with her constituents. AOC’s spokeswoman, Lauren Hitt, pointed out that the congresswoman appeared recently in Ramos’ own district where she met with leaders from a renter and small business advocacy group.

Queens Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani defended AOC in a Tweet, saying he had seen her multiple times in her district at events. “This just isn’t true. I have met with her multiple times (and) she has been a partner at every level of politics,” Mamdani wrote. “Astoria is all the better for having her represent us.”
